Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2001, $99,229)
The Bulloch County Board of Education is the fiscal agent for the Drug-Free Communities Coalition. The coalition serves the rural communities within Bulloch County, Georgia with a total population of 52,000, of which 28.8% are African-American.
The goals of the coalition are to: 1) reduce substance abuse among youth, and subsequently for adults, by addressing the risk factors and developmental assets in Bulloch County that serve to delay the onset and reduce substance abuse-related behaviors; and 2) strengthen and expand collaboration among community agencies in an effort to prevent and to reduce substance abuse among Bulloch County youth. To achieve these goals, the Drug-Free Communities Coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) increase the perception of the harmful effects of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs through youth development and education programming;
2) decrease youth substance abuse by engaging students in anti-drug alternative activities including after school programs and family activities;
3) provide awareness, education and training to parents including information sessions and family support programming;
4) increase access to coalition data and information to appropriate stakeholders; and,
5) strengthen coalition through increased collaboration with community anti-drug organizations.
