Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2001, $100,000)

The University of Delaware is the fiscal agent for the University/School Alliance's Partners in Prevention Coalition. The coalition serves New Castle County, Delaware, an urban area with a population of over 500,000. The goals of the coalition are to: 1) reduce substance abuse among youth and, over time, among adults by addressing the factors in a community that serve to minimize the risk of substance abuse; and 2) strengthen the collaboration among communities, governments, and private non-profit agencies to support community coalition efforts to prevent and to reduce substance abuse. To achieve those goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) provide prevention education and skills training for youth and adults;
2) ensure consistent, comprehensive, and sustainable effective prevention planning and programming procedures by school administrators; and
3) create and build sustainable networks among students, parents, schools, and community and governmental agencies to support prevention efforts. CA/NCF
