Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2001, $100,000)

Pathways, Inc. is the fiscal agent for the Boyd and Greenup County Champions for a Drug-Free Kentucky Coalition. The coalition serves the counties of Boyd and Greenup. Boyd has a population of 49,752 and Greenup has 36,891 residents. The target audience for the coalition's substance abuse prevention efforts is youth between the ages of 12-17, a population of approximately 19,551. The goals of the coalition are to 1) reduce substance abuse among youth and, over time, among adults by addressing the factors in a community that serve to minimize the risk of substance abuse and 2) strengthen the collaboration among communities, governments, and private non-profit agencies to support community coalition efforts to prevent and reduce substance abuse. To achieve those goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) increase the perception of harmful effects of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs;
2) increase the perception of the risk of getting caught using illegal substance among youth;
3) decrease the availability of illegal substances among youth;
4) expanding and enhancing Project Northland, a research-based prevention curriculum, to reach more students in grades six through eight;
5) publish a prevention newsletter for parents;
6) provide alternative drug-free activities for youth;
7) support and monitor clerk/server training and compliance checks;
8) and increase citizen and multi-sector membership and collaboration. CA/NCF
