The Story County Prevention Policy Board serves Story County, Iowa with a population of approximately 80,000. Story County is located in central Iowa and encompasses the City of Ames, home of Iowa State University. The coalition goals are to: 1) reduce substance abuse among youth and, over time, among adults by addressing the factors that increase the risk of substance abuse and by promoting the factors that reduce the risk; and 2) establish and strengthen collaboration among communities, government organizations, and private non-profit agencies to support substance abuse prevention and reduction efforts.
To achieve these goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) provide evidence-based substance abuse prevention education to students in the targeted school districts;
2) provide mentoring programs within elementary and middle schools to decrease school and individual risk factors and to increase protective factors;
3) provide elementary and middle school children with after school programs that promote healthy decision making and positive interactions with adults; and
4) implement a comprehensive media campaign on the dangers of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use.
