PROJECT SUMMARY FOR 2001-JN-FX-0095 (S-3)

The Nacogdoches Safe & Drug Free Community Coalition serves Nacogdoches County,Texas, a rural area with a total population of 59,203. The goals of the coalition are to 1) strengthen community collaboration toward prevention efforts; 2) establish clear, positive community standards regarding substance use/abuse; 3) allow youth opportunities for meaningful involvement in school, family, and community activities; and 4) reduce risk factors and strengthen protective factors for youth in the community. To achieve these goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies: 1) engage and mobilize key leaders and task force members toward active, sustained partnership with the coalition; 2) maintain and develop plans for collaboration with and support of existing resources, groups, and programs operating in Nacogdoches County; 3) promote and support parent education/involvement by facilitating and supporting training opportunities for parents in the community, with an emphasis on awareness to increase perception of disapproval of drug use by peers and adults; and 4) develop community-wide awareness and media campaigns designed to provide opportunities to create dialogue in the community, develop and enhance mobilization efforts to enhance community awareness of the colation efforts.CA/NCF
