Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2001, $100,000)
The Montgomery County Allies in Prevention (MCAP) serves Montgomery County, in upstate New York, a predominantly rural area with a population of 49,318. To achieve the two goals of reducing substance abuse among youth and strengthening community antidrug coalitions, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) provide all middle school youth with science-based prevention education;
2) establish an interagency Parent Workgroup to develop and implement a 2-year countywide action plan for parent education/ intervention;
3) encourage more community involvement in two mentoring programs: Partners to Assist Youth and the Hispanic Youth Life Enrichment Program;
4) support the Juvenile Accountability Program;
5) reduce underage drunk driving through the conduct of compliance checks by targeting high-risk areas, working with the Traffic Safety Committee to provide transportation during the holidays, and establishing a media campaign to increase community awareness;
6) support and empower the Montgomery Defense Against Meth, a youth led middle-school group that educates and mobilizes the St. Johnsville community; and,
7) establish an interagency Youth Workgroup to organize alcohol/drug-free activities at low or no cost for youth after school and during summer. CA/NCF
