Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2001, $100,000)
The Oak Harbor School District is the fiscal agent for the North Whidbey Youth Services. This coalition serves the residents of the City of Oak Harbor, WA which is located on north Whidbey Island. This suburban community has a population of 19,795. The goals of the coalition are to: 1) reduce substance abuse among youth and, over time, among adults; and, 2) establish and strengthen collaboration among communities, governments, and private nonprofit agencies in support of community coalition efforts to prevent and to reduce substance use/abuse among youth. To achieve these goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) create a youth-led advisory committee to develop drug-free youth activities;
2) strengthen parenting skills;
3) establish positive adult/youth relationships with one-to-one mentoring programs;
4) increase and enhance after-school program opportunities for youth;
5) identify and recruit additional members to serve on the coalition; and,
6) develop and implement a coalition framework that builds sustainability for community collaborative efforts.
