Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2001, $100,000)
The Wasco County Commission on Children and Families acts as the fiscal agent for the Wasco County Prevention Coalition. The coalition serves all of Wasco County, a rural area with a population of 24,150. About 25% of the county population is 0-17 years of age.
The goals of the coalition are to: 1) reduce alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use among youth in our community by providing positive opportunities and by increasing education about substance use for both youth and families, and 2) increase and strengthen collaboration among all sectors and organizations in Wasco County to change community norms about ATOD use.
To achieve these goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) increase the number of available drug- free activities for youth, as well as increase youth knowledge regarding risks associated with substance use through the implementation of drug education components in after-school activities;
2) educate youth, parents, and community members via Town Hall Forums, local media campaign, and information circulation through schools and businesses;
3) increase coalition membership through individual, organization, and community sector recruitment;
4) increase coalition members' capabilities to promote effective prevention strategies by providing leadership trainings; and
5) increase collaboration among agencies and organizations through outreach, education, and advocacy. CA/NCF
