Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2001, $61,527)
Furthering Youth is the fiscal agent for the Harrison County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition. The coalition serves the rural community of Harrison County, Indiana, with population of 35,000. The goals of the program are to: 1) reduce alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use by the youth of Harrison County; and, 2) strengthen the collaboration among communities, governments, and private non-profit agencies by providing opportunities for youth, parents, and community members to become active partners in the coalition's ATOD prevention efforts. To achieve these goals the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) expand Project Alert curriculum and SAVE program to elementary schools;
2) implement Positive Youth Development and Asset Building peer mentoring program;
3) provide ATOD prevention and awareness education presentations;
4) educate teachers and staff in the school district about ATOD prevention;
5) support youth efforts to enforce local tobacco and alcohol ordinances;
6) support the Community Policing Program and Alternative to Suspension program;
7) increase youth participation and leadership in coalition; and
8) recruit new members to further strengthen the coalition. CA/NCF
