PROJECT SUMMARY FOR 2001-JN-FX-0065
The Local Management Board for Children and Family Services of Kent County is the fiscal agent for the Kent County Adolescent Substance Abuse Coalition (ASAC). This coalition serves Kent County, Maryland, a rural area with a population of 19,197. The ethnic distribution of the county is 80% Caucasian, 17% African-American, and 3% Other. The goals of the coalition are to: 1) intervene with middle and high school youth to delay first onset of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs; and 2) carry out a community-wide prevention planning process that will engage participation by multiple community sectors. To achieve these goals, the coalition will continue to enhance and implement the following strategies:
1) deliver model substance abuse prevention programs such as Reconnecting Youth, Life Skills, Residential Student Assistance Program, Teen Court, Nurturing Program, and All-Stars to 10-18 year old youth and their families; and
2) implement the Assets Model approach to prevention planning that encourages an intergenerational cross-section of the community to engage in an asset-building initiative that will incorporate additional prevention programs based on an ongoing needs assessment.
