Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2001, $100,000)
Martin Luther King Jr. Community Services of Illinois is the fiscal agent for the Coalition for a Safe Community. The coalition serves the City of Freeport in Stephenson County, located in northwest Illinois. The goals of the coalition are to: 1) reduce substance abuse among youth, and over time among adults, by addressing the factors in the community that serve to increase the risk of substance abuse and the factors that serve to minimize the risk of substance abuse; and 2) strengthen the collaboration among communities, governments, and private non-profit agencies so support community coalition efforts to prevent and reduce substance abuse. To achieve these goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) increase citizen participation and strengthen community anti-drug coalition efforts to reduce substance abuse among youth through activities such as citizens- and youth-led policy groups;
2) conduct youth-led media campaigns and sponsor community initiatives designed to reduce tobacco and alcohol sales to minors; 3) sponsor alternative drug-free activities for youth;
4) support the All Stars youth program; and 5) recruit new coalition members and expand multisector membership.
