Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2001, $100,000)

The Suffolk Coalition to Prevent Alcohol and Drug Dependencies, Inc. serves as the fiscal agent for the Southampton Union Free School District. This diverse and rural community of 8,000 is located on the east end of Long Island, New York. There is also a growing immigrant population. The goals of the coalition are to: 1) reduce the incidence of alcohol and substance abuse by increasing protective factors, moving towards reversing and reducing known risk factors for students and families; and 2) address the needs of the varying cultures and issues of cultural diversity in the community by increasing the coalition's membership. To achieve these goals the following strategies will be implemented:
1) train coalition members to understand and apply the risk and protection model;
2) train coalition members in cultural diversity;
3) survey the various cultural populations to discover their needs;
4) provide parent education;
5) conduct a needs assessment in student usage; and
6) develop action plans to move the three at-risk populations from risk to protection.
All goals and strategies will be completed and evaluated by professionals throughout the grant.
