Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2001, $100,000)
Operation Breakthrough, Inc. is the fiscal agent for the Healthy Teen Collaborative, a coalition that serves the rural mountain communities of San Bernardino County in Big Bear Valley, California with a combined population of 18,000. The goals of the coalition are to: 1) reduce substance abuse among youth and, over time, among adults; and 2) strengthen collaborative and community efforts that reduce substance abuse. To achieve these goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) increase the perception of the harmful effects of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs through targeted awareness campaign that includes Red Ribbon Week, High School and Middle School Assembly for Alcohol Awareness month;
2) sponsor alternative activities for youth;
3) provide substance abuse prevention awareness, training, and education programs to middle and high school students;
4) support the peer mentoring program and expand the peer leadership program;
5) increase the substance abuse prevention dialogue between parents and youth at school parent night and at the high school orientation; and
6) recruit and strengthen the community coalition by hosting collaborative group forums and the drug prevention summit. CA/NCF
