Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2001, $100,000)
The Coalition for a Drug-Free Hawaii is the fiscal agent for the EWAlution, formerly the Ewa Beach Community Coalition. The coalition serves Ewa Beach on the west shore of Oahu, Hawaii, a rural area that is rapidly becoming a suburban community. The population of 26,792 is ethnically diverse and primarily composed of Filipino, Caucasian, Japanese, Native Hawaiian, and other Asian and Pacific Islander groups. The goals of the coalition are: 1) to reduce substance abuse among youth in Ewa Beach; and, 2) to support, strengthen, and sustain coalition's efforts to prevent and reduce substance abuse among youth. To achieve these goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) increase the number of high school youth receiving substance abuse intervention including counseling, case management, youth development activities, and community service opportunities;
2) recognize and reinforce youth's positive choices, academic achievement, and community service with the "Making Choices" program;
3) decrease community and neighborhood disorganization by collaborating with Weed and Seed efforts to implement at least two community policing and neighborhood restoration projects; and,
4) increase the sustainability of EWAlution efforts by establishing a committee to identify options and opportunities for collaboration with other agencies.CA/NCF
