Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2001, $100,000)

The Chance for Change Foundation is the fiscal agent for the United Communities Coalition of Pierce County. The coalition serves Pierce County, WA. This primarily suburban county has a population of 724,382. The goals of the coalition are to: 1) reduce substance abuse among youth and, over time, among adults; and, 2) enhance and strengthen the collaboration of the United Communities Coalition of Pierce County to bring about more efficient and effective service delivery. To meet the goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) develop an assessment and referral center for youth and families;
2) strengthen parents' skills in family management and communication;
3) secure strong, lasting and active support and involvement by all law
enforcement units;
4) partner with other individuals, committees and coalitions that address the issues of
substance abuse and juvenile justice;
6) increase school and community protective factors enabling youth to resist
substance abuse;
7) coordinate with other community organizations and coalitions to develop a
county-wide substance abuse prevention plan; and,
8) increase youth substance abuse prevention programs and activities in the
