Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2001, $78,449)
The fiscal agent for the Pioneer Abstinence Coalition is the Yorkshire Pioneer Independent School District. The coalition serves youth in the Pioneer Central School District, which is about 250 square miles and includes all or parts of 12 very rural towns, with a combined population of approximately 20,000. The goals of the coalition are to: 1) reduce alcohol, tobacco, marijuana and other drug use among youth in the Pioneer Central School District; and, 2) strengthen the cross-county Pioneer Abstinence Coalition by encouraging deeper levels of collaboration among the local communities, governments, and private non-profit agencies. To achieve these goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) provide youth and parent ATOD education, prevention, and support programs;
2) expand media campaigns to educate and to empower parents with prevention strategies via the Pioneer educational access TV channel;
3) provide alternative activities for youth during after-school hours;
4) collaborate with local businesses that sell alcohol and tobacco products to implement Project Sticker Shock throughout the Pioneer Central School District;
5) provide health education teachers with educational materials and resources; and
6) sponsor family social events that create opportunities for parents and children to engage in positive communication.
