Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2001, $55,299)

Pittsford Central School District serves as the fiscal agent for the Pittsford School Community Partnership Council. The partnership serves approximately 28,000 residents within the jurisdiction of the Town and Village of Pittsford, a suburban area made-up mostly of upper-middle class families. The partnership seeks to: 1) strengthen the coalition; 2) reduce youth substance abuse by addressing the risk factors that increase the likelihood of substance abuse; and 3) strengthen the protective factors that reduce the likelihood of substance abuse. To achieve these goals, the partnership will implement these strategies:
1) launch a variety of communications designed to correct misperceptions, encourage action, and increase awareness of community members with regard to the issues of substance use and abuse;
2) enhance opportunities for education programs designed to increase knowledge and skills among adults who interact with youth in the community;
3) provide alternatives to substance abuse and violence for youth in conjunction with existing prevention strategies within the community; and
4) apply and target interventions early in the development of substance abuse that include elements of skill-building, identify and build on strengths, offer incentives for participation, and address the relationship between substance abuse and other adolescent health issues.
