Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2001, $98,261)
The Community Action Partnership is the fiscal agent to the Southwest Coalition of Safe Communities (SWCSC). This coalition primarily serves the rural counties of Stark, Dunn, Golden Valley, Adams, Hettinger, Bowman, Billings and Slope that have a total population of 37,529. To achieve the two goals of reducing substance abuse among youth and of strengthening community anti-drug coalitions, this coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) conduct on-going recruitment of people (youth and adults) and of agencies/organizations to join the coalition;
2) provide organizational training and incentives to regional coalitions;
3) assist regional coalitions with long-range program planning;
4) identify funding sources in an effort to increase the coalition's matching financial resources;
5) implement comprehensive, research-based strategies that decrease risk factors by establishing a baseline for parent education participation through Project Northland and the tobacco cessation program; and
6) increase protective factors, both locally and regionally, by expanding the number of opportunities provided to youth that focused on resistance skills for alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.
