PROJECT SUMMARY FOR 2001-JN-FX-0018
The Dunbar Economic Development Corporation is the fiscal agent for the South Central Prevention Coalition that serves South Central Los Angeles, CA. This is an urban area with a population to 93,156 which is 87% Latino and 13% Black. The goals of the program are to: 1) reduce substance abuse among youth by mitigating risk and by strengthening protective factors; and 2) strengthen collaborative efforts among multiple stakeholders i.e., government agencies, community-based organizations, schools, families, civic organizations, and residents. To achieve these goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) conduct bi-monthly drug awareness workshops;
2) train multi-cultural groups of 10 peers educators to conduct workshops addressing the harmful impact of alcohol and other drugs to a minimum of 200 youth;
3) engage the residents of the housing developments in advocacy campaigns to decrease substance abuse among youth residents;
4) conduct drug awareness workshops for parents;
5) engage youth residents in advocacy campaigns to increase safety within each of the housing developments and surrounding community;
6) develop and implement a 6-week life skills workshop for youth between the ages of 15 - 20; and
7) implement parent education workshops that offer effective strategies for identifying youth drug use and for implementing appropriate interventions. CA/NCF
