Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2001, $100,000)

The Westminster Area Community Awareness Action Team (CAAT), CO is the fiscal agent of Building a Community Without Drugs (BCWD). BCWD serves Adams School District 50 and City of Westminster Schools, a suburban area with a population of 157,100. The goals of the program are to: 1) decrease substance abuse among youth, and, over time, among adults; and 2) strengthen the Westminster Area coalition's capacity for promoting drug prevention efforts in the community. To achieve these goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) increase youth awareness of the harmfulness of illegal drugs - marijuana, Rohypnol, LSD, cocaine, methamphetamine, Ecstasy - as well as tobacco, alcohol, abuse of prescription drugs and inhalants;
2) increase protective factors for youth by increasing their leadership and social skills, ability to talk to parents about drugs, and bonding to family/school/community, and by increasing access to drug prevention and recreation activities and safety resources;
3) support, develop, and increase access to youth activities;
4) support parenting and drug prevention skills programs for parents;
5) conduct and market an ongoing recruitment campaign to increase participation in the coalition; and
6) strengthen collaboration by promoting regular communication among the coalition and other groups in the community. CA/NCF
