Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2001, $100,000)

The Lincoln County Healthy Communities Coalition serves all of Lincoln County, MO with a population of 38,944. The goals of the program are to: 1) reduce substance abuse among youth and, over time among adults; and 2) strengthen collaboration and community partnerships within the county. To achieve these goals the coalition will implement the following strategies:

1) increase the perception of the harmful effects of tobacco through targeted outreach including the Teens Against Tobacco Use (TATU) program;
2) provide substance abuse prevention education through Life Skills Training (LST) to all 8th grade students;
3) support high school peer prevention programming including High Risk Drug/Alcohol Education Classes (HRD/A) for at-risk students;
4) deliver Challenges and Choices (C&C), a four hour workshop, for each 6th grade class in the Troy and Silex school districts;
5) support local business policies that discourage smoking in public areas;
6) encourage local businesses to participate in TEENS AGAINST TOBACCO USE, a community-wide campaign to reduce illegal tobacco sales to minors;
7) sponsor alternative drug-free activities for youth;
8) provide substance abuse prevention education programs to civic groups, chamber meetings, church groups, using teen participants and volunteer leaders; and
9) increase citizen and multi-sector membership and collaboration.
