Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2001, $54,694)

Northstar Community Alliance is the fiscal agent for Drug-Free Communities Support. The coalition serves the Greater Bennington community of Bennington County, VT, with a population of approximately 90,000 in a 25-mile radius. In its most recent grant year, the coalition continued to implement its program goals and objectives by increasing the effectiveness of the Center for Restorative Justice's Theater and Media program; expanding the program at the Center for Career Development; continuing to support the program created by the coalition and Applegate Housing, Inc. (for low-income families); and expanding the First United Methodist Church's "Open Door" program.
To achieve the two goals of reducing substance abuse among youth and strengthening community antidrug coalitions, this coalition will implement the following strategies: 1) continuing to use the Youth Risk Behavior Study in the Southwest Vermont Supervisory Union; 2) working with the Center for Career Development; 3) collaborating with the Center for Restorative Justice's Theater Arts Project for youth; 4) merging Main Street Friday night with the Methodist Church's youth program; and 5) supporting, along with Applegate Housing, Inc., programming by youth at a mini-radio station provided by a grant.
