Project Summary for 2001-JD-FX-0002 S-2
The purpose of continuing the Gang-Free Schools Project in East Cleveland, Ohio is to implement the five core strategies of OJJDP's Comprehensive Gang Model, with the East Cleveland School District playing a vital role. Based on the community assessment, implementation will provide intensive and quality service to the most serious of gang offenders between ages 12 and 22, and their families. Emphasis will be placed on outreach to youth affiliated with the four major East Cleveland gangs, and to school-age females involved in assaults. Services will include academic achievement, job training and readiness, counseling, and life skills. Effective implementation will be achieved through ongoing coordination and cooperation of the Steering Committee, the Project Coordinator, the Intervention Team and Street Outreach.
Since the inception of the Gang-Free Schools Project in East Cleveland, active support has been demonstrated by police, the school district, probation, the prosecutor's office, community residents, faith based, social service and grassroots organizations. Relationship building between these and other identified key participants, at the direction of the Project Coordinator and the Steering Committee, will continue to foster growth and development of the project, with the goal of future sustainability, well beyond any and all federal assistance.
