The purpose of the Houston Gang-Free Schools Project is to reduce gang-related violent crime and gang involvement in the Greater East End community, alleviate community fear of gang violence, improve early identification, assessment and intervention with gang-involved youth, and expand their opportunities.
It will target 100 predominantly Hispanic males, aged 15 to 24 who are criminally involved, known or suspected members of the most active gangs in the Greater East End. Associates, siblings or other family members of individuals in this primary target group, as well as known or suspected gang members who have been expelled from school or who have habitual school discipline problems will serve as a secondary target.
An Implementation Plan of goals, objectives, and activities based on the five strategies of the Comprehensive Gang Model has been developed, and will serve as the guide for reducing gang violence in the community. The Houston Gang-Free Schools Project will utilize an Intervention Team to provide direct services to gang involved youth; school based, law enforcement and criminal justice agency initiatives to reduce incidence of gang violence, and community participation and education to empower Greater East End stakeholders to deal with gang violence in their community.
