Project Summary for 2000-MU-FX-0017

Contra Costa County, Employment and Human Services Department and the John Swett Unified School District have agreed to jointly implement the Truancy Reduction Demonstration Program. The program is the fourth year of funding. The goal of this program will be to improve attendance rates and achieve improved academic progress by 50% for truant youth by continuing collaborative relationships with community service providers to address truancy prevention, engage parents and youth in the mission to solve truancy and to successfully refer youth to neighborhood service providers, county substance abuse services and a cadre of identified family related services. The Truancy Reduction program will be located at two schools, Hillcrest Elementary and John Swett High School in West Contra Costa and will address the causes of truancy by identifying risk factors and successful interventions that are associated with truancy. This will be accomplished thru monitoring, outreach, referrals for services, counseling and graduated sanctions for non compliance with truancy laws. The intent of the program is to stress that school attendance is required, that mandatory attendance laws will be enforced and parents will be held accountable for non compliance. The program is administered through the collaboration of law enforcement, residents, social services, school district and youth councils in Contra Costa's Weed and Seed site.
