The South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDOC) has no specific plans for its FY 2001 award. The SCDOC will assess the State's needs, and utilize the grant funds in a manner that represents the best value for the State. In addition, SCDOC will seek applications from local jurisdictions and the State's Department of Juvenile Justice for the use of these funds. The SCDOC will consider using some VOI/TIS funds for offender drug testing and intervention programs. Funds were subawarded to the SCDOC for the construction of 1,324 beds at five sites, and to the Department of Juvenile Justice for 72 detention beds. In addition, funds were subawarded to eight counties for construction projects totaling 309 beds.

No Workshops....No Jumpshots Program targets City of Gary, Indiana at-risk youth between 13 and 18 years of age who have demonstrated poor levels of academic performance and/or participation, as evidenced by chronic absences, tardiness, and below standard grades. There are five components to this Program: assessment, workshops, sports activities, employment services, and evaluation. The No Workshops....No Jumpshots Program is designed to address the problems of juvenile delinquency and gang participation, and poor academic performance and participation within City of Gary elementary and secondary school-age.
