Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2000, $1,500,000)

The purpose of this program is to reduce crime through a collaborative approach that includes law enforcement, door-to-door community organizing and youth development programs. Safe and Sound provides programs to 17,000 youth per year at Safe Places. Programs operate positive alternative activities during the hours when youth are most susceptible to substance abuse and crime.

In the past two years five additional Wisconsin cities (Beloit, Eau Claire, Green Bay, LaCrosse, Racine, and Waukesha) have developed Safe and Sound models suitable to their communities. All seek to reduce crime by collaborating with law enforcement and offering positive youth alternatives during after school hours when youth are most vulnerable to crime as perpetrators or victims.
