PROJECT SUMMARY FOR 2000-JN-FX-0108
The Harford County Office of Drug Control Policy is the fiscal agent for the Healthy Harford Coalition. Harford County is located in north central Maryland at the headwaters of the Chesapeake Bay and has a population of 218,590, of which 41,983 are school age children. In order to achieve the dual program goals of reducing substance abuse among youth and enhancing community collaboration among not-for-profit organizations and all units of government, the Healthy Harford Coalition will implement the following strategies:
1. Train 40 families with school-age children how to establish drug-free family policies while strengthening family bonds;
2. Address the reduction of substance abuse that is reported through the youth adolescent survey;
3. Use a public information campaign to address substance abuse issues;
4. Expand the working relationship among the local hospitals, law enforcement, and community organizations to address increasing drug overdoses;
5. Provide updated training to at least 100 school teachers, school administrators, health care professionals, social leaders, religious leaders, employers, and law enforcement officers;
6. Implement early intervention programs through the schools, faith community, and juvenile justice system; and
7. Conduct peer leadership training for youth at six different middle and high schools.
