Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2000, $100,000)
Suffolk Coalition to Prevent Alcohol and Drug Dependencies, Inc. is the fiscal agent for COMPASS (COMmunity, PArents, Schools, Students) coalition. COMPASS serves the Bay Shore and Brightwaters communities located on the south shore of Long Island, 45 miles east of New York City with a combined population of 25,500. The goals of the coalition are to: 1) reduce the incidence of substance abuse among youth and adults by increasing protective factors and reducing risk factors; and 2) strengthen and broaden the coalition, and secure members' commitment to enhance the coalition's efforts to influence community norms, availability of illegal substances, regulations, and increase citizen actions in support of these efforts.
To achieve these goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) provide the Life Skills curriculum to middle school youth;
2) expand ATOD prevention programming to elementary and high schools;
3) sponsor school/community substance abuse prevention activities such as health fairs, community forums, parades, and wellness events;
4) expand efforts by uniting with Safe and Drug Free School Advisory to form one community coalition;
5) utilize local youth in marketing and fundraising campaigns; and,
6) improve dissemination of information to newly-elected officials, local business owners, new civic/faith/agency leaders, and educators.
