FY 2004 Continuation Drug-Free Communities Support Program

Onondaga-Cortland-Madison BOCES is the fiscal agent for the Syracuse/Onondaga Drug and Alcohol Abuse Commission. The Commission serves the suburban county of Onondaga that includes the city of Syracuse, which has been designated as an Empowerment Zone. Located in central New York, Onondaga County has a population of 457,866 and is also home to the federally recognized Onondaga Tribe. The Commission's goals include: 1) strengthening community anti-drug coalitions by sustaining current efforts to prevent and reduce substance use among youth in Onondaga County; 2) supporting local program efforts to decrease youth risk factors and increase protective factors related to substance abuse; and 3) networking with other New York anti-drug coalitions, and federal, state, local and tribal governments. To achieve these goals, the Commission will implement the following strategies:
1) deploy coalition working committees to provide information to the county's communities about youth substance use/abuse, prevention, risk and protective factors, and effective outcome planning to increase community-wide awareness and knowledge;
2) maintain membership and involvement with county prevention coalitions and programs to assist with the overall county's efforts to reduce youth substance use/abuse;
3) provide technical assistance and resources to county providers and trainings to the community at large; and
4) incorporate the Getting To Outcomes empowerment evaluation system to ensure coalition sustainability through continuous improvement and reach positive outcomes.
