Western Canyon Youth and Family Coalition serves the rural community of Caldwell County and Canyon County, located in southwestern Idaho. Caldwell has a population of 22,500. To achieve the two goals of reducing substance abuse among youth and, over time, among adults, and strengthening community anti-drug coalitions, this coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) increase community understanding on the importance of building developmental assets in youth to prevent substance use and other high-risk behaviors;
2) increase resiliency in youth by providing them with positive adult role models through after-school tutoring, mentoring program, and case management;
3) increase youth leadership by providing them with opportunities to take leadership roles in the community and recognizing their efforts; and
4) identify community resources available to youth and identify additional strategies for advocacy and grassroots organizing.
