Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2000, $87,262)
The Orcas Island School District is the fiscal agent for the Orcas Island Prevention Partnership. The Partnership serves Orcas Island, WA, a rural and isolated island in Puget Sound with a population of 5,500 permanent residents. The goals of the coalition are to: 1) strengthen community coalition efforts to reduce substance abuse among youth by promoting and enhancing collaboration; 2) reduce substance abuse among youth by promoting and delivering effective substance abuse prevention strategies; and, 3) over time reduce adult substance abuse. To achieve these goals, the Partnership will implement the following strategies:
1) increase the perception of the harmful effects of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs;
2) increase parent networking and support;
3) promote family communication and management skills;
4) reduce favorable attitudes towards use of substances;
5) support Project Alert, a school based "Best Practice" prevention curriculum ;
6) sponsor alternative activities;
7) reduce access to alcohol; and,
8) increase access to treatment.CA/NCF
