Project Summary (S-3) Yakima County Substance Abuse Coalition is the fiscal agent for Yakima County Substance Abuse Coalition Prevention Expansion Project. The coalition serves Yakima County's youth and adults in four rural communities: Sunnyside, Granger, Grandview, and Mabton, WA. In its most recent grant year, the coalition continued to implement its program goals and objectives by continuing the Yakima County Best SELF Program, which provides a safe and enriching summer program that offers academic enrichment, recreation, and community service learning projects; and strengthening the coalition's capacity to conduct substance abuse prevention activities by enhancing and diversifying local resources. To achieve the two goals of reducing substance abuse among youth and strengthening community antidrug coalitions, this coalition will implement the following strategies: 1) providing youth with academic instructional activities and planned supervised recreational activities, and increasing by at least 15 percent each year their hours of participation in these programs; 2) engaging adult participation in community programs, such as voter registration, neighborhood coalition meetings, block watches, service learning activities, and local and regional substance abuse prevention events; and 3) providing community mobilization and leadership training for youth and adults in targeted communities. ca/ncf
