The Board of County Commissioners of Boulder County, CO is the fiscal agent of Boulder County Prevention Connection (BCPC). BCPC serves Boulder County, a suburban area with a population of 297,686. The goals of the program are to: 1) increase the skills of middle school students to resist drugs and alcohol and build on their strengths; and 2) strengthen and expand the number of parents, agencies, and groups to prevent and reduce substance abuse among Boulder Valley School District students. To achieve these goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) increase youth's knowledge of ATOD, their associated risks, and to build youth's communication, decision making, conflict resolution, and goal setting skills;
2) increase middle school student drug and alcohol resistance skills through positive youth development, prevention activities, parent-child communication, and building a supportive, strength-based, connected community;
3) educate coalition members on the usage and delivery of the project-developed ATOD curriculum in the delivery of related services, i.e., domestic violence, child abuse, etc.;
4) implement outreach efforts to the broader community to identify and to recruit additional at-risk youth;
5) provide parent education on the risks of substance abuse in an effort to increase parent's ability to discuss these issues with their children; and
6) support programs that increase parent/youth/community participation in substance abuse prevention efforts through the parent engagement network at each school.
