Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2000, $88,162)
The Town of Winchester is the fiscal agent for The Winchester Substance Abuse Coalition (WSAC). The total population of the target area served by the coalition is 20,810, and the population of school age children is 3,501. Winchester Substance Abuse Coalition serves the Town of Winchester, Massachusetts, a suburban Boston area which is 92.4 percent White. The goals of the program are to: 1) reduce substance abuse among youth and, over time, among adults addressing the factors in a community that increase the risk of substance abuse and promote the protective factors; and 2) establish and strengthen collaboration among community agencies to support the efforts of coalition. To achieve these goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) address risk factors in all aspects of area youth's lives, notably individual mental health, peer and family factors, by implementing the Life Skills Training program, and by targeting athletic teams through ATLAS/ATHENA programs;
2) provide information and support to area adults by implementing educational and professional development programs; and
3) initiate programs that address change of social norms in the community regarding alcohol use and abuse.CA/NCF
