The Regional Drug Initiative (RDI), through its United Now in Teaming With Youth (UNITY) Project, will use a multi-strategic approach to reducing youth substance abuse, including major new collaborations with the Portland Parks Bureau and the Asian Pacific American Consortium on Substance Abuse. The goals and objectives represent the coalition's vision of a healthy community free from the use of illegal drugs and abuse of alcohol. In year two of the grant, RDI has the following objectives: 1) to continue to decrease favorable attitudes toward drug use with drug-free messages targeting youth; 2) to increase positive peer support and family bonding by implementing peer helper and parenting programs in Portland's Asian Pacific American community; 3) to increase neighborhood attachment and conventional behavior by designing a substance abuse prevention program for incorporation into Portland Parks and Recreation; and 4) to develop plans for full implementation of the prevention program by Year III and ongoing sustainability.
