Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2000, $99,343)
The Hopkins School District acts as the fiscal agent for the Reduce the Use coalition. The group serves the Hopkins School District, a diverse, suburban area with a population of approximately 68,000. To achieve the two goals of reducing substance abuse among youth and of strengthening community anti-drug coalitions, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) educate parent groups on the effects of alcohol, marijuana, and tobacco on the adolescent brain;
2) broaden intervention and education of parents, staff, and students to include early signs and symptoms, e.g., ADHD, depression, anxiety;
3) involve underrepresented groups to increase participation in Reduce the Use activities;
4) use law enforcement/diversion to create consequences and solutions for youth risk-taking behavior;
5) increase community awareness and involvement of the Reduce the Use initiative; and
6) build support and participation within the business and faith communities, police departments, and city mechanisms for Reduce the Use messages. CA/NCF
