Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2000, $96,423)
The Pinon Project is the fiscal agent for the School Community Youth. The coalition serves the communities in the counties of Montezuma and Delores, CO. These rural counties have a combined population of 25,674 and 11% of the residents are Native Americans. There is a federally recognized tribal area within the coalition boundaries. The goals of the coalition are to: 1) create an effective and sustainable community coalition; and 2) reduce substance abuse and violence among youth in Montezuma and Delores counties. To achieve these goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) decrease risk factors related to substance abuse by creating an environment of positive peer pressure among youth;
2) provide factual information to teenagers about substance abuse, education, health issues, and self-esteem through the Teen Maze project;
3) increase community awareness of youth substance abuse and violence issues through social marketing campaigns;
4) encourage currently involved school districts and other districts to participate in the Integrated Colorado Youth Survey;
5) sustain involvement of government and community stakeholders in coalition activities; and
6) increase protective factors in youth by developing leadership skills during their participation in drug-free events for the community such as Support Youth 4 Change, the youth advisory board.
