Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2000, $100,000)
Wayside Youth and Family Support Network is the fiscal agent for the Watertown Youth Coalition. The coalition serves a target population of 35,000 with 2,373 school aged children in Watertown, Massachusetts. The goals of the coalition are to: 1) reduce substance abuse among youth and eventually among adults and 2) increase community collaboration. To achieve these goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) provide both scientifically based and non-traditional substance abuse prevention strategies, targeting Watertown youth, ages 12-19;
2) facilitate the Watertown Youth Coalition's existing Teen Peer Leadership Program;
3) along with the Watertown Community Police and Boys and Girls Club, assist in sponsoring "Friday Night Live" which emphasizes education and physical activity during the peak crime hours of 8 pm through midnight for teens;
4) provide training to the Teen Peer Leaders, grades 9-12;
5) facilitate the Adolescent Assault Awareness Program and;
6) produce public service announcement videos with messages aimed at reducing youth substance abuse.
