Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2000, $100,000)
The American Indian Prevention Coalition, Inc. (AIPC) provides services to Maricopa County, Arizona and surrounding reservation areas. AIPC serves Native American youth who live in urban areas but are mixed with reservation communities that are extremely rural. In order to achieve the two goals of reducing substance abuse among youth and of strengthening community anti-drug coalitions, AIPC will implement the following strategies:
1) participation by youth in research-based prevention curriculum, life skills training, tutoring, cultural ceremonies, Native language and art/music;
2) provide wellness conferences, parenting classes and recovery circles for family members;
3) involve adults and youth in preserving and restoring the traditional/spiritual community, the Indian business world and cultural arts;
4) link organizations and leverage health and social service resources; and
5) encourage and mentor new Native American coalitions as AIPC nurtures partnerships and expands the coalition circle.
