Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2000, $100,000)

The Rio Arriba Family Care Network Coalition serves the rural community of Rio Arriba County. Of the 36,000 county residents, 71% are Hispanic and 15% are Native American. The goals of the coalition are to: 1) strengthen the Rio Arriba Family Care Network Coalition; 2) increase perception, communication, and understanding among families of the risk and protective factors associated with the use alcohol and other drugs; and 3) maintain the focus of the community on the reality of drug- and alcohol-related problems with a multimedia, bilingual communications campaign. To achieve these goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) increase the number of collaborative opportunities among coalition partners;
2) increase the number of non-traditional partnerships and coalition members;
3) create a cadre of community leaders to organize a door-to-door campaign along with a series of "house meetings" which identify localized issues related to creating drug- free neighborhoods;
4) coordinate family-focused prevention activities;
5)i ncrease the number of safe- and drug-free facilities open to youth; and
6) increase community access to accurate data and prevention strategies.
