Fy 2004 Continuation Drug-Free Communities Support Program

Miami University is the fiscal agent for the Coalition for a Healthy Community. The coalition serves the rural town of Oxford, Ohio with a population of 18,937. The goals of the coalition are to: 1) reduce substance abuse among youth in the Oxford community and, over time, to reduce substance abuse among adults and; 2) strengthen collaboration among the Oxford community, Federal government, and state and local governments. In order to achieve these goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) reduce the prevalence of illicit drug and alcohol use among youth in Oxford;
2) reduce the prevalence of tobacco consumption among youth;
3) increase the perception of the harmful effects of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs;
4) increase the average age of first-time use of alcohol by 10%;
5) encourage the development of parent education that will enable consistency of parenting/interaction within the family;
6) sponsor peer intervention and mentoring in middle and high schools; and
7) recruit and strengthen the community coalition.
