Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2000, $100,000)

The Community Corrections Improvement Association is the fiscal agent for the Lean on Me Advisory Council coalition which serves Linn County, Iowa. Linn County has a population of approximately 192,000 and encompasses both rural and urban communities. The most notable accomplishment since this coalition's inception has been the development and successful implementation of the Lean on Me instruction and mentoring program.

To achieve the two goals of reducing substance abuse among youth and of strengthening collaboration among communities, units of government, and private and non-profit organizations, the Lean on Me Advisory Council coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) expand peer-to-peer mentoring/instruction through the Lean on Me curriculum;
2) expand the ROCK in Prevention program;
3) extend youth training and recruitment programs;
4) train new facilitators;
5) expand coalition membership;
6) assess and analyze needs and outcomes within targeted communities; and
7) disseminate information regarding coalition's efforts and successes via brochures, website and quarterly newsletters .
