Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2000, $99,034)
The Southeast Kansas Mentoring Initiative, serves four counties in rural southeast Kansas with a population of 98,067, of which 16,345 are school aged students enrolled in the local public school district. The goals of the initiative are to: 1) reduce identified risk factors for alcohol and drug abuse; 2) increase protective factors among youth; 3) strengthen the methods for replication of school-based mentoring programs; and 4) develop and implement a comprehensive evaluation model to identify the elements of effective school-based mentoring programs. To achieve these goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies: 1) develop a timeline for interagency collaboration; 2) administer training for school district staff and community members; 3) develop a marketing campaign to recruit potential volunteers for YouthFriends mentoring initiative; and 4) engage youth of all ages with adults from the community to promote youth success and encourage healthy drug free behaviors.CA/NCF
