The United Way of Central Ohio is the fiscal agent for the SouthSide Initiative. The coalition serves the SouthSide of Columbus in Franklin County, Ohio. This urban area has a population of 83,493 which is 42% African-American. To achieve the two goals of reducing youth substance abuse and of strengthening community coalitions, the SouthSide Initiative will implement the following strategies:
1) increase perception of the harmful effects of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs through comprehensive awareness campaign;
2) sponsor alternative youth activities;
3) provide awareness, training, and education to the parents about the illegal sales of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs products and their harmful effects;
4) support youth leadership skills training programs and substance abuse prevention activities;
5) recruit and strengthen SouthSide Initiative.CA/NCF
