Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2000, $100,000)
The Northeast Community Challenge Coalition serves Symmes and Sycamore townships and the cities of Blue Ash and Montgomery, suburban areas with a combined population of approximately 57,122 school-aged children. To achieve the two goals of reducing substance abuse among youth and of strengthening community anti-drug coalitions, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) establish an administrative infrastructure to support each community sector's asset-building initiative singularly and the community asset-building initiative collectively;
2) decrease the availability of alcohol and other drugs to youth; and
3) increase the average number of protective factors experienced by youth. Planned activities include: a) providing information, training, technical assistance, and other materials and curricula on asset-building to the schools and other community sectors; b) reviewing policy panel recommendations, c) educating all the schools and other community sectors about alcohol and drug prevention, d) improving communication between law enforcement and the schools, and e) consistently enforcing policies on access to alcohol and other drugs.
