The Kearns Town Council coalition serves Kearns Township in Salt Lake County, UT, a suburban community with 20 percent of the population reporting themselves as Hispanic. In its most recent grant year, the coalition continued to implement its program goals and objectives by training 35 students in peer mediation skills (the goal of each mediator is to participate in a minimum of five mediations), beginning a smoking cessation program at Kearns Junior High, training all 65 teachers at Kearns Junior High on how to deliver the anti-smoking message and facilitate the discussion process, training the school's Peer Leadership Team of 35 students to talk to their peers about smoking, inviting parents to a forum to teach them how to discuss smoking with their children, inviting students who had already begun to smoke to attend End Nicotine Dependence classes at the junior high in the evenings, teaching the SMART Moves Program at Western Hills Elementary four days a week to give 30-40 elementary-aged children life skills and conflict resolution skills while their parents learn to read and write in English, decreasing the number of teens at Kearns Junior High who are court-reported truancy cases by 40 percent, recruiting adults to help students improve their reading skills at South Kearns Elementary, and providing training programs for parents to encourage better parenting.
To achieve the two goals of reducing substance abuse among youth and strengthening community antidrug coalitions, the coalition will implement the following strategies: 1) continue to expand a youth mediation court that is run in coordination with the secondary school's Peer Leadership Team, the Kearns Junior High School, the Kearns Recreation Center, and the Kearns Coalition; 2) continue to be involved in the Community Action Team (CAT), which will work closely with the Kearns Coalition to decrease crime in Kearns (drug offenses will be a major focal point of CAT); 3) increase the number of children and youth who are involved in mentoring programs; 4) increase the number of students who stay in school by 20 percent; 5) spark academic interest and community belonging through applied service learning experiences in the community; and 6) continue to coordinate community efforts to add drug prevention programs to the afterschool and summer workshop programs.
