FY 2004 Drug-Free Communities Support Program

The Metropolitan Development Council is the fiscal agent for Our Youth of Promise Coalition. The coalition serves the urban neighborhoods adjoining Lochburn Middle School in Lakewood, Washington with a population of 12,806. The goals of the coalition are to: 1) educate youth to reject alcohol and illegal drugs; 2) mobilize Lochburn youth to lead change for drug-free schools and community; and, 3) strengthen and enhance collaboration and coalition building efforts to support drug-free communities in Lakewood. To achieve these goals, the coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) increase youth leadership skills in drug/violence prevention;
2) increase parent leadership and advocacy for youth to be drug-free;
3) sponsor positive alternative activities for youth and families;
4) strengthen youth involvement in developing public policy around drug-free
issues;
5) increase youth-led prevention education media messages to neighborhood
organizations;
6) strengthen collaboration with established Neighborhood Associations; and,
7) engage key leaders in the community to expand substance abuse prevention
