The Zaragoza Super Kids Community Coalition serves the Buckner Park Community of east Dallas with a population of approximately 149,492, which is 39.4% White, 37% Hispanic, 20.2% African-American, 2% Asian, 0.9% Bi-Racial, 0.4% Native American and 0.1% Other. The goals of the program are to: 1) improve academic performance of participants in the Super Kids Program; 2) focus on positive behavioral modification and violence prevention; 3) target alcohol abuse as a major cause of risky behavior among youth; and 4) increase collaborative efforts with other organizations and community members in order to expand the impact beyond this immediate community. To achieve these goals, the coalition will: 1) assure that participants receive adequate tutoring and homework assistance through collaborative efforts between Dallas ISD tutors/staff and Girl Scouts of Tejas Council staff; 2) develop strategies that involve Dallas ISD, Police Department, Parks and Recreation Department and Human Services Department that promote positive behavior, healthy decision making and empower participants to avoid substance abuse,and gang activity 3) oversee a teen developed school community project that focuses on the negative impacts of drug and alcohol abuse and smoking; and 4) work with key community members and organizations to establish a campaign to increase awareness of youth drug, alcohol, smoking and gang problems.
