Description of original award (Fiscal Year 2000, $84,840)
Washington South Supervisory Union acts as the fiscal agent for the Greater Northfield Coalition Council. The coalition serves the rural towns of Northfield and Roxbury, VT, with a population of approximately 6,367. In its fourth grant year, the coalition continued to implement its program goals and objectives by: 1) strengthening prevention activities through the local law enforcement department; 2) focusing media attention on the prevention of substance abuse by youth; and 3) providing programming to promote sustainability through training in grant writing, volunteerism, and evaluation. To achieve the two goals of reducing substance abuse among youth and of strengthening community antidrug coalitions, this coalition will implement the following strategies:
1) coordinate the local grant program, which awards 15 youth serving groups for activities directed toward the prevention of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs;
2) educate the community regarding substance abuse related problems and resources for tackling these problems;
3) serve as an umbrella organization for area substance abuse educators and professionals; and
4) represent the coalition at the local, regional, and state level meetings and community events. ca/ncf
